Quilting with Red White and Blue

If your anything like me, you quilt according to the season.  In the Fall and Winter I make cozy warmer colored quilts.  In the Spring, all the soft flowery fabrics get pulled out. And, for summer it’s usually reds and creams.  But this year, I must be feeling extra patriotic.  I pulled out a red, white (well, cream), and blue quilt kit I bought years ago called  “Chippewa Nine Patch”.  The quilt and the fabric, Prairie Paisley, was designed by Minick and Simpson, who always have the greatest fabrics in these colors.  Unfortunately, my quilt doesn’t quite look like this:

It looks more like this:

Chippwa nine patch strips

Holy guacamole!  There are 25 – 81 patch squares.  No wonder I love it.  I’m hoping to get it done in the next month.  Ha ha ha!  I’ll have so much time to quilt when all the kids are home from school.  ROFLOL!  No seriously,  I really want this one done.  But, until I can show you the finished pictures, I found some other awesome red, white and blue quilts to get you in the patriotic mood.

This gorgeous Irish Chain quilt is from Suzy's Sewing Basket.  She sent it to a soldier in Iraq which resulted in a volunteer effort which delivered more than 6,000 quilts to wounded military personnel and their families.

I am totally in LOVE with this patriotic quilt from Cluck Cluck Sew.  She did a block tutorial for this quilt last year.  I going to have to give this one a try.

This beauty was in American Patchwork and Quilting seven years ago!  It is also another one of my UFO’s.  I bought it when I was a few days away from delivering child number four.  No wonder I never finished it.  One day….

In patriotic red, white, and blue and at 62.5" square, an APQ cover quilt, 'Oh My Stars,' would work well as a Quilt of Valor. Click on the photo to purchase the pattern.

Now I need to go sew, so I can enjoy my own patriotic quilt.

  1. I'm feeling inspired! I just happened to come across your blog cause it was mentioned on another quilting/sewing blog that I follow (can't remember which one)! The fact that you're in Texas too was an added bonus! My mother-in-law recently did some "de-hoarding" and came across a red, white and blue jelly roll. I have no idea how old it is but the fabrics are gorgeous! Its "Bluebonnet Trail" By Sentimental Studios from Moda :) I seriously doubt that I'll attempt anything that has more than 9 squares... but hopefully something! Thanks for the inspiration!!

  2. You are so talented! I took a quilting class eons ago...did one small top. Work and life seemed to override the sewing for a long time. You are inspiring!

I found your blog via Babblings & More. I wanted to stop by and say hello to a fellow Texan! I'm a new follower and look forward to more of your creativity.

Stop by and say hi when you can!

    1. If you are talking about the last quilt pictured on this post, I know exactly where you can find it! The quilt was in the June 2005 American Patchwork and Quilting magazine. You may be able to find it other places, but I checked Amazon and they have a used copy found here:

I hope that is what you want. Good luck!

  5. I just finished this quilt and gave it to my older brother as a QOV. I used the rapid fire lamoyne star ruler. It worked great. Turned out beautiful
